I love this game, the indescribable atmosphere and unreal graphics, the system of the semi-turn-based game P. S. old fallout with the same atmosphere and modern system pleases!
What I did not expect from this game, besides its well-developed RPG foundation, is the sheer size of it. Fallout Tactics covers 3 CDs, contains 20 missions, and for the average game will take over 60 hours to complete. That is amazingly long, especially for a strategy game.
Contains all the elements of a classic but foolishly falls short in vital areas. The overall quality does remain however and can keep a gamer involved for weeks, though not without side effects.
Many strategy fans will appreciate the depth and Fallout groupies will love the continuity, but some things like control in CTB mode or the pace in the classic style may drop bombs in the wrong places.
I started with the newer Fallout games. Then about a year ago I decided to pick up the triple pack (Fallout 1, 2, and this one. At first, I didn't quite understand this game. It was confusing, felt a little weird and such. I got a few missions in and I have to say that it isn't all that bad. I was astonished by the graphics of the cutscenes. A little disappointing in the linear gameplay.
Though if the original 2 games had combat like this, it would be nearly perfect.
I say around a 7 or 7.5 out of 10.
I don't understand all of the critical negativity surrounding this game (outside of Metacritic, that is!). It was never meant to be a direct sequel to the first two Fallout titles and yet it gets judged as if it were one time and time again. It's a combat strategy game with some adventure/RPG elements set in the Fallout universe. It also happens to be fairly good. It's aged reasonably well and I recommend it, as long as you're not planning to hold it to the light of the original Fallout titles.
This was a game I enjoyed much more than the first two.
The graphics had some small improvements, nothing amazing, but it helped a lot to identify some things and items in the scenario that I couldn't before.
The gameplay in my opinion has improved dramatically. The option to turn off turns and be a tactical action game was really cool in this game. Being able to choose the specialty, weapons and which companions to follow is great.
Of course, it's still a limited game due to being from 2001, but it's a lot more fun than the previous ones.
The story/general context of this game is better than the previous ones too, but your decisions practically have no weight at the end, much less throughout the story.
At the time it must have been a great game, but today I dragged myself to finish.
Random encounters are super frequent, outdoorsman skill allow to skip most of that pointless fights (which actually don't give you any benefits whatsoever) but it is so frequent that sometime you made only one millimeter on worldmap between another encounter. So that skill is absolutely necessary here not mention other skills which seem to be useless. Its totally linear game there is no free exploring on map so this map could be even removed as its FAKE (you cant discover ANYTHING beside special encounters) For that am give zero. In real strategy you should have every locations available or at least parts of it accessible, visible on map. And you should be commander who lead and plan some strategy make decisions. This would be tactic. Where what you get is linear shooter with Fallout style graphic. Its NOT Fallout just because it have similar gfx and stats system. Without freedom of exploring and entire adventure part that is pointless. They should at least make some poor dialogs and poor quests so it would be modified by fans into Fallout 3 Am played Awaken mod and it almost works as adventure game so cant understand why they cut off best parts and give that shooter. Ok it look good and may keep you busy for while but reality is that they broke game and its bit pointless now. Somehow am enjoyed even that broken game so what would be with all this missing stuff? Definitely epic 10/10 game, but this is zero because am feel its broken.
SummaryThis latest entry in the post-nuclear "Fallout" series is not the third chronological installment, but rather a spin-off that takes place between the first two episodes and which shifts the focus of the series from its original RPG, story-based roots in favor of strategic, tactical, squad-based combat.
