Nice but nothing special. Liam Neeson plays his role very well, but the thin plot, the superficial characters and the lack of depth make this film nothing more than entertaining.
Neeson gives us a bit more to chew on here than his standard hunt-for-his-daughter/avenge-his-son fare, an actor who lets us see the panic, see the wheels frantically turning and who never shies away from letting us see him sweat.
An inoffensive but inessential addition to Neeson’s latter-years thriller canon. Less the bus that couldn’t slow down than the car that couldn’t get started.
Retribution seems especially disappointing, however, because of its untapped potential to be cheesily entertaining. The finished product is so bad that I can’t even recommend it for viewing on a streaming service – somewhere it should land very quickly.
Neeson himself has done admirable work making mid-budget throwbacks with a little extra grit and gravitas. But it might be time for him to retire that very particular set of skills.
An enjoyable summer film with Liam Neeson looking a bit more pained than usual, and I could have done without the "children in peril" schtick, but overall enough action and plot to make a trip to the movies (and relief from the heat and humidity) worthwhile.
The movie was as advertised.
A typical Liam Neeson thriller.
I bit hokey at times, but I honestly didn't hate the movie.
Liam Neeson is the 21st century version of Charles Bronson.
I've seen worse movies, but this one did exactly what it was suppose to do.
Entertain me.
In Retribution Liam Neeson does not get out of the car to exhibit physical prowess impossible to believe for a septuagenarian, but its director does pretend that he sustains without much to do this lame exercise of tension and suspense that pretends to create thrills and exhibit an imaginary quality that simply cannot conjure. I'd like to emphasize one point unequivocally: this film possesses the same throwaway quality as the numerous movies that are release direct-to-video or VOD featuring Nicolas Cage, John Travolta, and Bruce Willis. The only reason it was released in theaters is because clearly Liam Neeson still has the audience's approval at the box office and the producers know it.
That's how devoid of imagination, caliber and merit this film really is. Referring to it as generic would be a generous description.
